Faversham is not only a fascinating place to visit in itself but also a great base from which to explore Kent and the South coast, the lovely cathedral city of Caterbury, and London is nearby and easily accessible by rail. Furthermore Dover and Folkestone are 30 minutes due south by car or train, meaning day trips to Europe are convenient and recommended.
Faversham is a charming market town with a rather intruiging history. At one time Britain's principal supplier of gunpowder the munitions mills can still be seen and visited today despite the huge explosion in 1916 of one of the larger munitions works in which 200 tons of TNT exploded in a blast that could be heard as far away as Norwich. Faversham's cobbled streets work themselves around medieval houses and culminate at the Fleur-de-Lis centre. The town is also home to a delightful ancient sea port. Another major point of interest is the Shepherd Neame brewery that not only serves to fuel the local population, but is also open for visits. The brewery tours offered are well worth a visit (although our landlord here at the Railway suggests feigning injury at the reception, thus enabling one to do away with any walking whatsoever and sit at the brewery bar for the duration!).
